Designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and opened in April 2018, the Qatar National Library in Doha serves a three-fold mission as a national library, research institution, and public library for the digital age. Located in Education City, a district developed by Qatar Foundation as a hub of higher education, the building emerged from plans announced in November 2012 by Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation. The library succeeds the Dar Al Kutub Al Qatariyya, founded in 1962 as one of the first public libraries in the Persian Gulf region and previously regarded as Qatar's national library. As a UNESCO-defined national library, QNL collects global knowledge and materials relevant to Qatar and the region, while simultaneously serving as a community meeting place and supporting education and research across all levels.
