Located in Downtown Albuquerque, the Rosenwald Building is a historic commercial structure designed by Henry Trost of the El Paso–based firm Trost & Trost and completed in 1910. A pioneering three-story reinforced concrete structure—the first of its kind in the city—it exemplifies the Chicago and Prairie School architectural styles through its simple geometric ornamentation and distinctive two-story recessed entrance. Originally a 42,000-square-foot flagship department store for brothers Aron and Edward Rosenwald, it was celebrated upon opening as "the handsomest, most up-to-date, and most complete department store in the southwest." McLellan Stores occupied the ground floor from 1927 to around 1977. Following a 1981 renovation that converted the upper floors to office space, the city of Albuquerque acquired two floors in 2008. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties in 1978.
