The Shanghai Oriental Art Center, a major performing arts facility in Pudong designed by French architect Paul Andreu, opened in 2004 with an innovative visual concept: five interconnected hemispherical halls arranged to resemble a butterfly orchid when viewed from above. These "petals" house an Entrance Hall, Concert Hall, Opera Hall, Performance Hall, and Exhibition Hall, serving as one of Shanghai's leading cultural venues. A distinctive feature is its high-tech ceiling that changes color at night to reflect the nature of performances occurring within. Located off Century Avenue, the center was officially inaugurated on July 1, 2005.
