Completed in 1955 in Shanghai's Jing'an District, the Shanghai Exhibition Centre is a monumental convention and exhibition complex originally named the Sino-Soviet Friendship Building to celebrate the Sino-Soviet alliance. Designed in Stalinist neoclassical style with Russian and Empire influences, the structure spans 93,000 square metres and dominated Shanghai's skyline for over three decades, standing at 110.4 metres to the top of its spire and serving as the city's tallest building until 1988. Its imposing main façade, featuring an open quadrangle and elaborate central tower, faces Yan'an Road, now the city's primary east-west thoroughfare, while a colonnaded secondary frontage overlooks West Nanjing Road, one of Shanghai's premier commercial streets. Today it remains a major architectural landmark in central Shanghai.
