The Shell Centre, designed by Howard Robertson, is a 107-metre skyscraper located on Belvedere Road in the London Borough of Lambeth and serves as the global headquarters of Shell plc. Rising prominently on the South Bank of the River Thames near County Hall, it has become a notable backdrop to the London Eye. The original complex comprised the tower and three adjoining nine-storey wings—collectively called the "Upstream Building"—along with the separate "Downstream Building," which was likewise a nine-storey slab block form divided from the Upstream Building by a railway viaduct. The Upstream Building's wings have since been demolished, while the Downstream Building was sold by Shell in the 1990s, heightened by one additional storey, and converted into residential apartments now known as the Whitehouse Apartments. From 2004 to 2020, the building served as a canvas for the Mayor of London's New Year's Eve celebrations, with a 60-second countdown projected onto its facade as part of the Thames-centred fireworks display.
