Spring Garden, a historic home near Laurel in Sussex County, Delaware, is an L-shaped dwelling that evolved over a century of construction. The centerpiece is a large brick core built around 1782, featuring a 2½-story, center-hall plan with a three-bay Federal-style facade and Georgian interior details. A 1½-story summer kitchen addition of brick and frame was constructed around 1860 at the rear, followed by a substantial two-story frame addition in Victorian Gothic style added to the west gable end circa 1880. The resulting composition reflects changing architectural tastes from Federal elegance through Victorian expansion. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the homestead documents the domestic building practices and aesthetic preferences of Delaware's rural elite across nearly a century.
