The Aon Centre at 1 Willis Street in Wellington, New Zealand, is a commercial office building completed in 1984 that held the distinction of being the tallest structure in the country upon its opening. Designed in late International Style modernism with high-tech elements, the building is characterized by its striking square black form. Its construction was notably delayed by a decade owing to a trade dispute. When finished, it surpassed Auckland's 87-meter Quay Tower, though it retained the title of New Zealand's tallest for only two years before the 106-meter BNZ Tower opened in Auckland in 1986. Originally known as the BNZ Centre and later the State Insurance Building, it is now called the Aon Centre and remains the second tallest building in Wellington.
