Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Thiruparankundram, a suburb of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, is a rock-cut shrine built into a hillock and dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. Founded by the Pandyas in the 6th century CE, it ranks among the Six Abodes of Murugan (Arupadai Veedu), the most sacred temples dedicated to this deity. According to Hindu mythology, the temple commemorates Murugan's marriage to Deivanai, daughter of Indra. The main shrine houses Murugan alongside other deities including Shiva, Vishnu, Vinayaka, and Durga, following Shaiva tradition with six daily rituals. The temple is governed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu, and celebrates the Kantha Sashti festival during the Tamil month of Aipasi as its most prominent observance.
