Located in the heart of downtown Sumter, South Carolina, the Sumter Town Hall-Opera House is a four-story Richardsonian Romanesque building of ashlar brick constructed in 1893. The structure features a distinctive four-faced clock tower that has long served as a focal point for the surrounding area. Originally built to house municipal functions and cultural performances, the building was internally remodeled in 1936 to accommodate a ground-floor movie theater and offices on the second floor, where the opera house had previously occupied the space. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the building stands within the Sumter Historic District and has been recognized as one of Sumter's most significant architectural landmarks. Following a major reopening in 1987, the structure continues to serve as a testament to the city's cultural and civic heritage.
