The Teatro Metastasio, located on Via Benedetto Cairoli in central Prato, was designed by architect Luigi de Cambray Digny and built beginning in March 1829, opening with Gioachino Rossini's *Aureliano in Palmira* on 8 October 1830. Commissioned by local notary and director of the Royal Construction Offices Benedetto Cecconi as a public opera house successor to the Teatro dei Semplici, the theatre featured a sipario and vault frescoes painted by Antonio Marini. A major 1867 renovation by architect Telemaco Bonaiuti removed the ceiling frescoes and reconfigured the seating into a semicircular arrangement, while a new entrance was constructed. Damaged during the Second World War, the theatre underwent extensive repairs from 1956 to 1964. Purchased by the Municipality of Prato in 1939, it remains the city's principal venue for opera, plays, and concerts under management of the Fondazione Teatro Metastasio.
