The Index is a 328-metre, 80-storey mixed-use skyscraper in Dubai designed by Foster and Partners and completed in 2010. The tower combines office space on floors 5–29 with residential units on floors 31–77, including duplex and triplex penthouses, separated by a double-height sky lobby containing recreational facilities. Conceived as a climate-responsive structure, the building is precisely oriented along the east–west axis so that its concrete cores shield the interior from the harsh desert sun's low-angle rays in morning and evening, while south-facing facades employ extensive sun shades to minimize midday solar penetration. This passive environmental strategy dramatically reduces air-conditioning demand: internal temperatures remain below 28°C even during peak summer without active cooling. The tower accommodates 2,442 parking spaces and received the 2011 Best Tall Building Middle East & Africa award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
