Situated in the village of Thirucherai near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur district, the Saranathan Temple is a Dravidian sanctuary dedicated to Vishnu, who is here worshipped alongside five consorts, most notably Lakshmi as Saranayaki. One of the 108 Divya Desams—sacred temples celebrated in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Alvar saints (6th–9th centuries CE)—the temple is believed to commemorate Vishnu's appearance to the river goddess Kaveri, who performed penance at this site. Built over centuries with contributions from the Medieval Cholas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Madurai Nayaks, the temple features a distinctive five-tiered rajagopuram rising 120 feet, a surrounding granite wall enclosing its shrines and three bodies of water, and a rare shrine dedicated to the river Kaveri itself. Six daily rituals sustain worship, and three yearly festivals culminate in the chariot festival celebrated during Chittirai (March–April), drawing devotees across the region.
