Completed in 1929–1930 on Federal Street in Boston's Financial District, the United Shoe Machinery Corporation Building is a 24-story steel-frame skyscraper designed by George W. Fuller and Parker, Thomas & Rice. Built for a corporation that controlled 98 percent of the nation's shoe machinery business at the time, the structure exemplifies Boston's finest Art Deco design, particularly evident in its elaborately decorated lobby. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and designated a Boston Landmark in 1983, the building received rare dual protection—both interior and exterior—from the Boston Landmarks Commission.
