The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is a Baroque château located in Maincy, near Melun, some 55 kilometers southeast of Paris. Built between 1658 and 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Superintendent of Finances under Louis XIV, the château was designed by architect Louis Le Vau in collaboration with landscape architect André Le Nôtre and painter-decorator Charles Le Brun. This was the first large-scale project uniting all three artists, establishing a prototype for the Louis XIV style that integrated architecture, interior design, and landscape design into a unified whole. The garden's pronounced visual axis exemplifies this harmonious approach, making Vaux-le-Vicomte an influential work of mid-17th-century European architecture. Today it stands as a classified historical monument and tentative World Heritage Site.
