The William H. Copeland House in Oak Park, Illinois, is an Italianate residence originally built in the 1870s that underwent a significant 1909 remodeling by Frank Lloyd Wright. When Dr. William H. Copeland commissioned the architect, Wright proposed an ambitious three-story Prairie School design, which was ultimately rejected in favor of a more restrained approach. The executed remodel tempered Wright's characteristic Prairie aesthetic while introducing one of its signature elements: a low-pitched hip roof that became the exterior's most prominent alteration. The house has been recognized as a contributing property to a U.S. Registered Historic District since 1973.
