Winter Place is a historic complex in Montgomery, Alabama, comprising two conjoined houses and three outbuildings constructed between the 1850s and 1870s. The Italianate North House, built in the 1850s, served as the residence of Joseph S. Winter and his family, while the Second Empire South House, constructed in the 1870s, became the home of Winter's daughter Sally Gindrat Winter Thorington and her husband Robert D. Thorington. Architectural historians believe that Samuel Sloan, who designed Joseph S. Winter's first Montgomery residence in 1851, also designed Winter Place. After decades of deterioration, the property was placed on the Alabama Historical Commission's Places in Peril list in 2004 and subsequently added to both the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage (2005) and the National Register of Historic Places (2006). The complex underwent restoration efforts beginning in 2006 and continuing into later decades.
