Standing at 205 South Fifth Street in Leavenworth, Kansas, the AXA Building is an ornate two-and-a-half-story red brick commercial structure completed in 1905 by contractor R. B. Yoakum for St. Louis investor Charles Espenscheid. Designed by local architect William B. Feth, the building displays Late Victorian styling with Neo-classical ornamental details that distinguish it from its neighbors, particularly in its highly articulated cornice, second-story bay windows, and lobby entry. Its 125-foot facade along Fifth Street exemplifies the inventive decorative vocabulary of early-twentieth-century Midwestern commercial architecture. Originally known as the Eppenscheid Building, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and is also registered on the Kansas Register of Historic Places.
