Completed in 1986 and designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, the AXA Equitable Center is a 54-story office skyscraper at 787 Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, rising 229 meters between 51st and 52nd Streets. The facade is clad in granite rendered in a two-tone pattern of white horizontal and red vertical bands, punctuated by three setbacks and a penthouse crowned with arched windows. The complex features a public galleria spanning from 51st to 52nd Street, an arched entrance atrium from Seventh Avenue, an underground concourse, restaurants, and a corporate auditorium. Originally developed by the Equitable Life Assurance Society adjacent to its existing headquarters, the building was conceived to house the company's offices alongside high-profile retail and cultural tenants, including the Le Bernardin restaurant and a Whitney Museum branch at ground level. Equitable incorporated an extensive artwork collection into the building's public spaces before vacating the tower in the late 1990s; the property was subsequently acquired by CalPERS in 2016.
