The Beijing National Stadium, colloquially known as the Bird's Nest, is a high-tech stadium designed by Herzog & de Meuron with Ai Weiwei at Olympic Green in Chaoyang. Constructed between March 2004 and June 2008 for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, the facility spans 204,000 square meters and accommodates 80,000 spectators (91,000 with temporary seating). The stadium's distinctive interwoven steel structure, which inspired its iconic nickname, was subsequently repurposed for the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Owned and operated through a partnership between Beijing Municipal State-owned Assets Management Co Ltd and CITIC Group, the stadium represents a landmark of contemporary Olympic architecture in China.
