Cologne Cathedral is a Gothic Catholic cathedral in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne. Construction began in 1248 to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and serve as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor, but work halted around 1560. Serious attempts to complete the structure resumed in the early nineteenth century, with proper funding arriving only in the 1840s; the edifice was finally finished to its original medieval plan in 1880. At 157 meters tall, it is the world's tallest twin-spired church and the tallest cathedral, with the largest façade of any church in the world. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1996, Cologne Cathedral is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting approximately 6 million visitors annually, and stands as a renowned monument to both German Catholicism and Gothic architecture.
