Near the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino opened on March 10, 1995, as the world's first rock and roll-themed resort. A joint venture between Hard Rock Cafe co-founder Peter Morton and Harveys, the property occupied 16.7 acres at the corner of Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road. At its peak, the resort comprised 1,506 rooms across multiple towers, a 61,704-square-foot casino, and The Joint, a prominent music venue that also hosted the weekly pool party event Rehab. An 11-story hotel tower added in 1999 was part of a $100 million renovation. Following its 2007 acquisition by Morgans Hotel Group and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, a $750 million expansion added two further towers, restaurants, and nightclubs by 2010. The Hard Rock gained notoriety for risqué advertising campaigns that drew a 2004 complaint from the Nevada Gaming Control Board; it also attracted controversy over drugs and sexual conduct at its nightlife venues. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas took over the site following renovations in 2021.
