Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, located on the University of Miami's campus in Coral Gables, Florida, is the home stadium of the Miami Hurricanes baseball team. Originally opened on February 16, 1973, with a capacity of 5,000 spectators, the field was named in honor of Mark Light, who died of muscular dystrophy; his father, George Light, a university fan, donated funds for its construction, and the dedication occurred in 1977. Following a $3.9 million contribution by New York Yankees all-star Alex Rodriguez, the facility underwent major renovation from 2007 to 2009 and was renamed. The ballpark, designed by Populous, sits bounded by Ponce de Leon Street and San Amaro Drive, with university sports facilities to the north. Since its inception, the University of Miami baseball program has become one of college baseball's most successful, winning four national championships (1982, 1985, 1999, and 2001) and appearing in 25 College World Series.
