Rideau Hall, officially Government House, is the official residence of the governor general of Canada located in Ottawa on a 36-hectare estate at 1 Sussex Drive. Built in 1838 by architect Thomas McKay, the main building comprises approximately 175 rooms across 9,500 square metres and is accompanied by 27 outbuildings. Blending Regency, Victorian, Renaissance, and Norman architectural styles, the palace serves as the primary vice-regal residence and also functions as the official residence of the Canadian monarch when in the country. While most of the building is devoted to state affairs—hosting foreign heads of state, ambassadors, and constitutional ceremonies such as ministerial audiences and swearing-in ceremonies—only 500 square metres serve as private living quarters. The property was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1977 and is classified as a federal heritage building. Open to the public for guided tours year-round, Rideau Hall attracts approximately 200,000 visitors annually.
