Find out more
Sahara Las Vegas is a hotel and casino anchoring the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada, originally opened on October 7, 1952, as the sixth resort on the Strip. Built by Del E. Webb Construction Company on land that had previously hosted the Club Bingo casino, it initially featured an African theme. Architect Martin Stern Jr. designed major expansions, including a 14-story tower in 1960 and a 24-story tower in 1963. The property declined through the 1960s as larger resorts opened nearby. After changing hands several times, including a $100 million Moroccan-themed renovation in the 1990s that added a NASCAR attraction and roller coaster, the original Sahara closed in 2011. The resort was completely renovated and reopened in 2014 as SLS Las Vegas, featuring modern design, before experiencing financial challenges; one tower was subsequently rebranded as W Las Vegas. The property currently comprises 1,616 rooms and a 50,662-square-foot casino, and houses the northernmost station of the Las Vegas Monorail.
