The Shirley Opera House in Atwood, Kansas, a brick building erected in 1907, combines Early Commercial style with Victorian detailing. Located at 503 Main Street, it was constructed during a transformative moment for the young community—coinciding with the building of the Rawlins County Courthouse, the creation of permanent sidewalks, and establishment of a public waterworks. Originally serving as both theater and department store, the opera house hosted political rallies, graduations, dances, debates, musicals, and traveling road shows in its upstairs space, while the main floor accommodated various commercial tenants. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, it remains the sole surviving commercial building from its era in Atwood that has retained its original character, earning recognition for both its historical significance to community entertainment and its architectural merit as a symbol of civic permanence.
