At 909 Chestnut Street in downtown St. Louis stands a 44-story skyscraper designed by HOK and originally built as the Southwestern Bell world headquarters. Occupying 1.4 million square feet, it remains Missouri's largest building by area. The tower, which carried several names through corporate mergers—One SBC Center, One Bell Center, and One AT&T Center—was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. After AT&T vacated in 2017, the building passed through multiple owners and foreclosure before being acquired in 2024 by an entity affiliated with the Boston-based Goldman Group, which announced plans to convert it into residential apartments, though renovation efforts were suspended in 2025 pending state tax credit legislation.
