Designed by Renzo Piano and completed in 2001, The Biosphere is a striking spherical glass and steel structure suspended over the sea at Porto Antico in Genoa, Italy, adjacent to the Aquarium of Genoa. Originally built for that year's G8 summit, the 20-metre-diameter sphere—weighing 60 tonnes—functions as a greenhouse exhibiting a recreated tropical rainforest micro-climate. Within its approximately 200 square metres of interior space, the structure houses over 150 plant and animal species, including tree ferns, palms, birds, turtles, and fish, creating an immersive ecosystem experience for visitors.
