Toyota Center is an indoor arena in Houston, Texas, designed by the architectural firm Populous and completed in 2003. Home to the Houston Rockets of the NBA, the venue was constructed following a protracted approval process that began with owner Leslie Alexander's 1995 request for a new facility to replace the Rockets' longtime home at The Summit. After a failed 1999 voter referendum, an amended agreement between the city and the Rockets was finalized in 2001, clearing the way for construction to begin that July. The arena opened in October 2003 at a total cost of $235 million, with Houston covering the majority of expenses while the Rockets funded additional enhancements. The Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota secured the naming rights through a $100 million payment. The facility has also hosted the Houston Aeros of the AHL and the Houston Comets of the WNBA.
