Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub serves as the terminal station for the PATH rapid transit system within Manhattan's Financial District. The main station house, known as the Oculus and opened in March 2016, features distinctive white interlocking ribs that rise dramatically above ground, housing two underground floors that incorporate part of the Westfield World Trade Center mall. The station itself comprises five tracks and four platforms positioned four floors below street level, serving as the eastern terminus of both the Newark–World Trade Center and Hoboken–World Trade Center lines. Its construction followed the September 11 attacks, with a temporary station opening in 2003 before work on the permanent structure began in 2008. The hub connects various modes of Lower Manhattan transportation, making it the fifth-busiest transportation hub in the New York metropolitan area.
