At 611 West 6th Street in Downtown Los Angeles stands a 42-story, 189-meter modernist tower completed in 1969 by architect William L. Pereira & Associates. Originally commissioned by Crocker Citizen's Bank as its Southern California headquarters, the building was acquired by AT&T and briefly served as the company's regional center. Upon completion, it became Los Angeles's tallest building and the first structure to surpass City Hall through pure structural height rather than decorative spires. The design features Pereira's signature aesthetic: a cross-shaped tower clad in vertical aluminum beams, anchored on its west side by a massive blank concrete slab housing elevators and utilities, which functions as a backdrop for corporate signage. The exterior incorporates cleft vertical columns, grid-patterned ceilings, and architectural lanterns characteristic of Pereira's work.
