The Royal Palace of Werla, an archaeological site and *kaiserpfalz* located near Schladen-Werla in Lower Saxony, occupies a 20-hectare plateau atop Kreuzberg hill overlooking the Oker river. Built in the Romanesque style, this imperial residence served as a crucial base for the Ottonians during the 10th century before ceding political importance to the newly established Imperial Palace of Goslar. The complex subsequently evolved into an independent settlement complete with an industrial quarter, but by the 14th century fell into ruin. Rediscovered in the 18th century, systematic excavations of the core fortress and surrounding outworks—intensified since 2007—have revealed its layout and significance. Since 2010, portions of the foundation, fortifications, and earthworks have been partially reconstructed, and the site now operates as a public archaeological and landscape park.
