Built in 1978, the São Paulo Brazil Temple is a modern architectural landmark in São Paulo and the first Latter-day Saint temple constructed in South America. Announced in 1975 by church president Spencer W. Kimball and begun in 1976, it was groundbreaking for introducing a single-story, single-spire design—a notable departure from the church's earlier temple architecture. The distinctive spire reaches 101 feet tall. As the 19th temple built and 17th operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it marked a significant expansion of the denomination's presence into South America.
