Located in Thiruvenkadu village in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, the Swetharanyeswarar Temple is a Dravidian-style Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Swetharanyeswarar through the sacred lingam. Revered in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns composed by the Nayanars, the temple holds significance in Saivism as one of the nine Navagraha Stalas associated with the planet Budha. The complex, spanning approximately two acres, features a striking seven-tiered gopuram entrance and multiple shrines, with those of Swetharanyeswarar, Aghora, and Nataraja being most prominent—all enclosed within concentric granite walls alongside three temple tanks. Originally built by the Cholas, the present masonry structure dates to the 16th century under the Vijayanagar kings. The temple observes six daily rituals and celebrates four yearly festivals, notably Chitra Pournami and Aani Thirumanjanam, and is currently administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
