Is-Suq tal-Belt, or Valletta Market, is a Victorian market hall built in 1861 in Malta's capital, notable as the island's first building constructed predominantly of iron. Originally serving as a covered market in the heart of Valletta, it suffered severe damage during World War II; subsequent rebuilding proved insensitive to its original structure, and further alterations in later decades contributed to its decline through the 1970s. An attempt to reinvent it as a shopping arcade called Ixtri Malti in the 1980s failed to reverse this trajectory. Following comprehensive renovation in 2016–17, the market reopened in January 2018 as a food market, restoring a Grade 1 heritage landmark to contemporary use.
