Located in the village of Avoor, 12 kilometers south of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, the Aavoor Pasupatheeswaram temple is a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva, built in Dravidian architectural style. One of three madakoils constructed by the 7th-century Chola king Kochengat Chola, the temple gained renown for its Panjakavyamuthra—five images of Bhairava vijay—and for its mention in Tirugnana Sambandar's Tevaram, a 17th-century Tamil Saiva canon. The present masonry structure dates to the 9th-century Chola dynasty, with later expansions added by the Thanjavur Nayaks during the 16th century. The temple features a three-storied gopuram (gateway tower), numerous shrines with those of Padikasunathar and Soundaranayagi being most prominent, multiple halls, and two precincts. Inscriptions attest to contributions from the Pandyas. The temple maintains four daily rituals and observes major festivals including Shivratri, Annabhishekam, and Thiruvadhirai throughout the year.
